Today we started our actual jobs on the ship. Nathan began operating. His second cataract of the day was 'the scariest looking cataract' he had ever seen. He used instruments that he'd never seen before, and did maneuvers that he'd never tried before. He learned a whole lot. It was a little stressful, but everything turned out great. I think that this is going to be a great experience for him. Nathan's instructor, Dr. Strauss, is very fast. He does cataract surgeries in an average of about 5 minutes. I spent the day figuring out exactly what I would be doing on the ship. Besides assisting Nathan in surgery, I will also be working some on the ward and in the clinics as needed. There is a possibility that I may take a few call nights, but these are generally mild. We had a few more painful orientation sessions, but I think we now know what to do if the ship starts to sink in the port, even if it's on fire at the same time, and being attacked from all sides. So that's good :) Tomorrow I'm going with a few folks to what is supposed to be the French equivalent of Walmart in the city here. We have met some very neat folks here, including a British Lord. Our interactions with patients on a personal level have been brief up to this point, but we look forward to more in the future. Please continue to pray that the Lord gives us opportunities to testify to His great love and work in our lives.
Here are a few pictures of our home on the mercy ship. I hope to get some pictures of Nathan operating tomorrow.
Dorm living!! Wish I could come in with fabric and sticky tack! So glad to see it all, Kristen. I can picture you curled up on that sofa and pray for you instead of talking to you on mine...much more effective anyway! Know that you are on our minds constantly. Prayed for Peru just minutes ago and then checked and here you are. Love our Lord. And He loves you.
ReplyDeletePS...hysterical understatements in your little posting...love that if the ship is sinking AND under attack WHILE on fire that there's an actual plan. I'm sure that now mass chaos will not reign under such circumstances. Good to know! LOL
So glad for the update!! And wanted to say that your being there testifies of His love. Have you heard of the missionary that walked and walked to share Jesus and would not be heard anywhere, the people simply would not listen, until he wore out his shoes and continued on until his feet were about worn out, he feel asleep under a tree and was awakened to a crowd around him, they saw his feet and said, "Tell us what is worth walking for until your feet look like that!" You have walked a long way Kristen and your feet are beautiful for Him! We pray for you!
ReplyDeleteI'm excited to get to follow you guys as you serve!! Looks like you'll definitely be having adventure after adventure. Thanks for updating.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! It's so good to know that y'all arrived safely, and you have already begun your work on the ship. Your quarters look nice although I'm wondering if you'd like for me to send your red curtains to add some color! Your safety drills were alarming, but we'll pray daily that you never have to use that training! Bobby and I are in awe of what you and Nathan are doing so far from home. Speaking of home, we are in Temple again, making happy memories with our grandson, thanks to you and Nathan and God's perfect plan! Thanks again for the updates. We are excited every time there is a new post from you!
